Phosphates are used in municipal water systems to perform three broad functions: inhibit corrosion of water mains/plumbing (iron, steel, galvanized, asbestos/cement, lead, copper), sequester nuisance metals in the water supply (iron, manganese, calcium, magnesium). They can also improve the quality of water in the distribution system by removing scale deposits & tuberculation, discouraging microbial film formation/regrowth, and stabilizing free chlorine disinfectant residuals.
SCALE - Hardness particles are kept separated so they cannot precipitate and form deposits when heated. Maximum hardness: 15 GPG.
CORROSION - A protective coating is formed on all metal surfaces, safeguarding against acidity/alkalinity, hardness, chloride, and other factors which affect the corrosion of water equipment and pipes. pH range: 6.5 - 9.0
IRON - Dissolved iron, up to 1ppm, is kept suspended in solution (sequestered), preventing dissolved iron from precipitating, which would cause staining and discoloration.
Better Water Phos Beads is a proprietary high-quality domestically (US) produced glassy polyphosphate bead specifically formulated to successfully treat potable and non-potable water systems to furnish the following system benefits. The product is uniquely designed to function continuously and effectively. Control the naturally existing minerals (such as iron, manganese, calcium, etc.) found in potable water sources - minimizing the potential for rusty and/or dirty water though out the water system. Reduce mineral scale buildup (by sequestration and dispersion) on the interior surface of the water distribution system - decreasing tuberculation while increasing the carrying capacity of the system. Maintain water clarity through functional sequestration and mineral scale control - resulting in less discolored water. Inhibit corrosion of steel distribution water lines along with iron and galvanized pipes and residential copper and lead plumbing. Inhibiting lead and copper leaching by forming a protective coating on the interior surface of the pipe effectively lowering lead and copper levels minimizing potential pinhole leaks. Reduce the demand for chlorine because of the stabilization of minerals and reduction of scale deposits effectively improving disinfection throughout the water distribution system. Gradual removal and inhibition of mineral scale deposit formations in hot water lines and residential water heaters. ® Since Better Water slow Phos Beads is formulated with highly stable ingredients, the treatment remains effective over longer periods of time than standard phosphate treatments.

The cartridges contain food-grade slow melt polyphosphate that dissolves slowly in water to inhibit scale and rust build-up. This type of treatment is recommended for use with ice machines, coffee and vending machines, food service equipment, water heaters, air conditioning equipment, and many other types of water processing equipment. All materials are FDA grade. The cartridges are effective for treating scale, corrosion, and iron problems for up to six months at various flow rates and feed concentrations.
Orthophosphate based additives are classified as corrosion inhibitors and as such react with dissolved metals (e.g. Ca, Mg. Zn, etc.) in the water to form a very thin metal-phosphate coating or it reacts with metals on a pipe surface to form a microscopic film on the inner surface of the pipe that is exposed to the treated water. Polyphosphate-type chemicals react with soluble metals (iron, manganese, calcium, magnesium, etc.) by sequestering (bind-up) the metals to maintain their solubility in water. The phosphate sequestering process minimizes the risk of discoloration, staining, scaling, taste/odor, and other water quality complaints.
Phosphates are water treatment chemicals used to solve specific water quality problems resulting from inorganic contaminants (iron, manganese, calcium, etc.) in groundwater supplies and also to maintain water quality (inhibit corrosion, scale, biofilm, reduce lead and copper levels) in the distribution system. Orthophosphate and polyphosphate are two general types used in water treatment along with many different phosphate compounds that exist for use in the water treatment process. Ortho and polyphosphates work together, stabilizing water quality and minimizing color, scale, deposits, corrosion, and chlorine demand in drinking water systems.
